Although there is plenty we can say about our own products, it’s the positive feedback we receive from customers that makes our commitment to sell functional and beautiful furniture so rewarding. Recently, we had the privilege of working with a customer named Ellen with the purchase of a Murphy bed, a woman whose story we just had to share.
Ellen’s search for a Murphy bed began when she needed extra room to start a special project for Asayo’s Wish Foundation, a charity she volunteers for.
Asayo’s Wish Foundation is an organization founded by Sarah Asayo, a native born Ugandan woman who, as a child, was forced to flee Uganda with her family due to the civil war caused by Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army. When Sarah returned to Uganda and her hometown of Kaberamaido as an adult, she was appalled and distressed by what she saw, especially the plight of the children. With the help of family members still living in Uganda, family members living abroad, and kindhearted Americans, she began the process of establishing a non-profit charitable organization. She quickly realized that it would not be possible to help all of the Ugandan children who had become homeless and without families as a result of civil war, famine and disease, but she could help the children of her own hometown, some of 
whom might be her relatives. In addition to establishing an orphanage to feed, clothe, house, and educate over 200 children, the foundation ultimately hopes to improve the lives of Ugandan women and their families, eradicate poverty and eliminate unemployment through education and small-scale enterprise.
It was Ellen’s daughter, another volunteer for Asayo’s Wish, who originally introduced Ellen to the organization and inspired her to visit Uganda. Although it’s a simple task in other parts of the world, Ellen learned that having access to education is particularly difficult for children living in Uganda. Because of the extreme poverty that these children face, few can afford the mandatory uniform and pencil required to attend school.
Ellen decided to use her passion for sewing as a means to help the children of Asayo’s Wish. She chose to make dresses for the girls, but realized she didn’t have the space at home necessary for a project of this size. She had a guest bedroom, but it was filled with furniture, which left little room for sewing. Her sewing projects were usually restricted to the living room, limiting the types of projects she could do.
For Ellen, a trip to More Space Place in Austin was the answer. With her new Murphy bed and two accompanying cabinets, Ellen didn’t have to sacrifice her guest bedroom and was able to create a multi-functional room with plenty of space and storage for her sewing materials. As she explained, “I wanted a combined space that was both a guest bedroom and a sewing room. A lot of my sewing projects used to be in the main living area, but now I can work without disturbing the rest of the house and my family.” Recently, Ellen finished 115 T-shirt dresses for dozens of Ugandan girls to wear after school and on weekends. Wearing their uniforms for school use only extends the life of the uniforms and saves money for the Foundation.
